Participants: Colonel Gibbon in command of about 200 men surprised the 90 tepe village of Nez Perce.
The troops swept through the camp and within 20 minutes had secured the area. White Bird and Looking Glass rallied the warriors and fired back at the troops from the willows. Gibbon fell back to a wooded bluff, accurate fire from the Indians picked then off while the women and children escaped. There were about 50 Indians killed, many women and children while the army lost 23 men.
