Bone Pile Creek
Date of Battle: 13 - 15 August
Location of Battle: Gillette, WY
Participants: James Sawyer Expedition with 53 civilians and 143 cavalry soldiers against about 500 Cheyenne and Sioux warriors.
On the 13th the party camped on Bone Pile Creek where some Cheyenne Indians killed one man and ran off some horses. The next day the Indians reappeared and made a dash for the horses but were driven off. On the 15th about 500 warriors circled the camp and began shooting. The expedition gave them a wagon load of supplies and a fight broke out. 2 soldiers, one civilian and 2 Indians were killed.
