Participants: Colonel Henry Carrington with about 55 soldiers against many Sioux and Cheyenne warriors.
After the Indians attacked a wood cutting detail, Col. Carrington led 25 soldiers and sent another 30 out with Capt. Fetterman to protect the wood wagons. Things went from bad to worse and Lt. Alexander threatened to to have some of the troops shot by their own comrades if they wouldn't stop chasing the decoy Indians. 1 Indian and 2 soldiers were killed.
