Participants: Lieutenant Colonel George A Custer with 450 soldiers and 400 civilians against 300 Sioux warriors.
Six Indians tried to run off the horses of three soldiers of the advance. The soldiers chased the Indians until they came upon about 300 warriors. The Indians chased them back to the main body where they tried to set fire to the grass but it wouldn't burn. Three civilians and one soldier were caught out in the open prairie and killed.
