The camp was greeted by Indian fire from the south shore early in the morning. Custer's men returned fire and then the Indians crossed downstream with about 200 warriors which were countered by 120 soldiers. More Indians crossed upstream and were met by other soldiers. Unable to scare the soldiers, the Indians broke off the attack and went back across the river. Three soldiers and four Indians were killed.
